Verses and Prayers

There Is A Place

There is a place in my heart that is yours alone,
A piece of my life no other can own.
The tears in my eyes I can wipe away
But the memories of you will always stay

May The Winds Of Love Blow Softly

May the winds of love blow softly,
to that quiet lovely place,
Wherever my true love is sleeping,
Who can never be replaced

Not 'Til The Loom Is Silent

Not 'til the loom is silent,
And the shuttle ceases to fly,
Will God unroll the canvas
And reveal the reason why.
The dark thread is as needful,
In the weaver's skilful hand,
As the threads of gold and silver,
In the pattern he has planned.

Along The Road To Yesterday

Along the road to yesterday we wander back to you.
Memories of us all together of the happy days we knew,
With every day that passes we seem to find a way
To amble back to meet you on the road to yesterday.

Miss Me, But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free
Miss me a little - but not too long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me - but let me go

For this is a journey that we must all take
And each must go alone
It's all a part of the Master's plan
A step on the road to home

When you are lonely, and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me - but let me go

She Is Gone

(Read out at the British Queen Mother's Funeral)

You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see her
or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she's gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she'd want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

The Day God Took You Home

You never said "I'm leaving"
You never said goodbye
You were gone before I knew it,
And only God knew why

A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried
If Love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died

In Life I loved you dearly
In death I love you still
In my heart you hold a place,
That no one could ever fill

It broke my heart to lose you,
But you didn't go alone
For part of me went with you,
The day God took you home.

The World May Never Notice

The world may never notice
If a Snowdrop doesn't bloom,
Or even pause to wonder
If the petals fall too soon.

But every life that ever forms,
Or ever comes to be,
Touches the world in some small way
For all eternity.

The little one we longed for
Was swiftly here and gone.
But the love that was then planted
Is a light that still shines on.

And though our arms are empty,
Our hearts know what to do.
Every beating of our hearts
Says that we love you.

Our Hearts Still Ache With Sadness

Our hearts still ache with sadness,
Our secret tears still flow,
For what it meant to lose you,
No-one will ever know.
But if love could build a stairway,
And memories build a lane,
We would walk our way to Heaven
And bring you back again.
The flowers we place upon your grave,
Are placed with loving care,
But no-one knows the heartache
As we turn and leave you there.

Fisherman's Prayer

I pray that I may live
To fish until my dying day

Treasured Memories

When I think about the happiness,
That you and I shared.
And all the things you've said and done
To show how much you cared.
Although we seldom mentioned it,
We both knew it was true.
We had the kind of happiness,
Life gave to very few.
A Home that we both cherished,
A family we held dear
and love for one another
That grew deeper every year.

Each Day A Leaf May Wither

Each day a leaf may wither,
Each day the sun may set
but the hearts that loved and lost you,
are the hearts that will never forget

We Seldom Ask For Memories

We seldom ask for memories,
But today just one would do,
To leave our front door open,
And see our Mum walk through,
We would wrap our arms around her,
And kiss her smiling face,
For our Mum was someone special.
No-one will ever replace her.

Sunshine Passes

Sunshine passes
Shadows will fall
But love and memories
Outlast them all

Death Is Nothing At All

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I, and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other
That we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes
We enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me,
Let my name be ever the household word that
It always was.

Let it be spoken without effort,
Without the trace of a shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant
It is the same as it ever was
There is absolutely unbroken continuity.

Why should I be out of mind because I am
Out of sight? I am but waiting for you
For an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner.

All is well.
Canon Henry Scott Holland (1847-1918)

A Ship Sails

A ship sails and I stand watching till she fades on the horizon

and someone at my side says
She is gone.

Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all.
She is just as large now as when I last saw her.
Her diminished size and total loss from my sight is in me, not in her.
And just at that moment, when someone at my side says she is gone,
there are others who are watching her coming over their horizon
and other voices take up a glad shout -
There she comes!

That is what dying is.
An horizon and just the limit of our sight.

Lift us up O Lord, that we may see further.

Bishop Brent

She Was So Very, Very Special

She was so very, very special
And was so from the start
You held her in your arms
But mainly in your heart

And like a single drop of rain
That on still waters fall,
Her life did ripples make
And touched the lives of all.

She's gone to play with angels
In heaven up above
So keep your special memories
And treasure. them with love

Although your darling daughter
Was with you just a while
She'll live on in your heart
With a sweet remembered smile

Tho Absent You Are Very Near

Tho absent you are very near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.

You Suffered Much In Silence

You suffered much in silence,
Your spirit didn't bend,
You lived your life with courage
Until the very end.
In tears we could see you sinking away,
We wish you could have stayed,
But when we knew you were sleeping at peace,
And free from all pain,
We couldn't wish you back
To suffer once again

Sweet Is The Sleep That Ends All Pain

Sweet is the sleep that ends all pain,
We would not waken you to suffer again.
The Tears in our eyes we will wipe away
But the love in our hearts is here to stay.

The Memory Of Me

I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways.
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun.
Of happy memories that I leave when life is done

We plan for nearly every financial eventuality we may face in life; we invest for our retirement and have health insurance and house and contents insurance. Yet when it comes to funerals, many of us don't like to think about them, let alone plan in advance.

Thinking about your own funeral is difficult for some people but, as the funeral... Read More
