Hi… My condolences to the Plato family and friends. I was saddened to learn of the passing of Phil. It seems like only yesterday we as boys were playing Cowboys and Indians in the domain of the developing suburb of Waikiwi… Phil always had to be a Cowboy .. why… because the Indians always got shot.. always. Where has the time gone? Phil loved his fishing… so one Friday evening in the middle of a Southland Winter we decided to go to the Iron Bridge at Wallacetown and stay the night in a pup tent and do a little fishing… well those Southland Winters are harsh so Phil decided to light a fire… wasn’t sure how he would achieve that… but Phil came prepared with a can of petrol and a box of matches.. we gathered branches and twigs from nearby trees and prepared to light it up… so Phil’s plan was I would strike the match as he poured the petrol on the firewood… match lit but Phil misjudged the firewood and poured the petrol over my left forearm… same arm holding the match… arm now an instant towering inferno.. we laughed about that for years later.. that was after I was discharged from the Accident and Energency department at Southland Hospital. So Phil you literally left your mark on me. Rest in Peace my friend….P.S Phil when you reach Heaven I am confident there will be a pub., a lake and maybe even an Indian Warrior possibly holding a can of petrol.
