Dear Lee and the Anderson family,
I was deeply saddened to read of Joe's death in the ODT and wish to send my deepest sympathy and love to you all. Joe was a very special man, a true man of the law, a loving husband and father and friend to so many people. While Brian and I lived in Invercargill we had the pleasure of knowing him for many years, always cheerful with a sense of humour, enjoyed setting the world to "rights" and a great conversationalist. A wonderful life, well lived and he will now be at peace. "Joe has run the race of life which God set before him"
Margaret Hall, Wanaka
Rest easy Joe. Your friendship was always valued. Deepest sympathies to Lee and the family.

Bronwyn and I send our sympathies to Lee and the rest of Joes extended family. We have really enjoyed our monthly lunches with Joe and Lee for many years and it has only been this last year that their health has prevented them coming. No more whitebait and blue cod for you now Joe but perhaps where you have gone you won’t need to rely on my fishing efforts to enjoy those delicacies that you loved so much. Joe you have been a true friend to me from the first day we met in 1990 and I will miss your happy laughter and quick wit along with your very valuable advise. Rest in peace my friend.
Ian Beker, Invercargill
My deepest condolences to the family on your sad loss. I have fond memories of my association with Joe as both a solicitor and a judge when I was in the Courts at Dunedin, Gore and Christchurch. He was always a gentleman and was highly respected.
Neil Adams, Christchurch
His Honour, Judge Anderson was very scary to appear in front of as a new graduate solicitor in the early 1990s, but despite a gruff manner was very kind and compassionate. I remember an occasion when His Honour had a large numebr of gang members to be sentenced on Sale of Liquor charges (the Police having failed to find evidence of other offending on a search warrrant). As there were too many to fit in the dock, the gang members all filed into the jury box in the Invercargill Court, and they and His Honour had a quiet chuckleas the sentencing proceeded, as that was the only time they were likely to legitimately be in that part of the courtroom!
A fine Judge and person, my condolences to his family and friends.
Pene Williams, Dunedin
Dear Lee and family

I have such wonderful memories of you both since I was a wee girl. Well Joe you have lead a wonderful life and told some amazing stories. You and Lee had a special and wonderful friendship with my mum and dad (Ngaira and Russell) and shared many holidays, celebrations and get togethers over many years. Joe I am sure Dad will have that whiskey waiting for you.
Lee I am sorry that Andy and I can’t make Joes funeral on Friday but we will watch it on live stream. My thoughts and huge hugs to you.
With much love

Dear Lee
I have just heard of Joe's passing on a video call from Peter Chin. Please accept my kind thoughts and sympathy for one of life's characters, your beloved husband Joe. I am sending this message from Queensland where I have been living for the past 2 years. I have very fond memories of Joe (and if Graham were here he'd probably add a few "interesting" stories too no. doubt).
Kindest regards Lee and family. Jan Smellie

Dear Lee and family,
What a great life and legacy Joe has left us. We, my sister Michele and I, remember Joe with affection and respect, having both sat in his court room on many occasions covering the proceedings for the Southland Times. He was a dear friend to our parents and always gave wise counsel.
He will be missed by his family and friends. With best wishes. Vivienne

Thinking of you all. Mum and I first met Joe in Dunedin Hospital when my dad (Basil O'Byrne) and Joe were having a quadruple bypassThey became great mates talking about politics across the room. Not sure the other patients had the same political view. Then I met Joe and Lee again when I was the practice manager of the doctor's surgery where they went. Always enjoyed chats with Joe.
Lee sending you all my love.
Kath Hunter, Invercargill

It was with much sadness that I read of Joe's passing, I met Joe & Lee well working at H & J Smiths, they always made you smile when ever they came into store, I got to talk to them more recently, when they came into Mitre 10, where I now work, I loved his quick wit & Lee's gentle kindness, they were such a lovely couple. Sending love & kindness to Lee & Joe's family.
