To Anne, Jethro and Amber. I was shocked and saddened to hear of John's accident. Although it has been many years since I last saw you all, I remember John well and the times spent yacht racing both with and against him. He was always passionate about the things he did and eagerly gave his time to help out anyone who needed it. John will be missed by many people.

To John's family - my thoughts are with you at this sad time. I really enjoyed working with John, notably on the original Splash Palace project. It was a project that absorbed a huge amount of energy and which required lots of lateral and innovative thinking. All of which John was very good at. The resounding success of the finished project is testament to John's leadership and flair. I will also remember John for his enthusiasm and passion for whatever he was doing - sailing, skiing, mountain biking, and others enthusiasms - and his enjoyment of life. John's legacy will be the many good and useful buildings, not only in Invercargill, which show that McCulloch flair.

The Bluff Yacht Club mourns the tragic loss of our longstanding club member and friend, John McCulloch.

John has been an active member of the club for longer than any of us can remember. He has held all club office positions, was a very competitive sailor of both dinghies and with his Farr740 sport trailer yacht Highlander, and was just a good buggar to have around.

He coached and mentored within the club, was an analytical and calm thinker, he knew how to make yachts sail fast, and he was always there for us. His home garage became the club workshop for an optimist building project.

He recently officiated as the Race Officer for our Oyster Regatta, and those in the kitchen fondly recall him coming off the water and eating a dozen (probably more) oysters before anyone else. He needed them desperately.

At the time of his death, John was representing our club and the recreational boating community with the new Bluff boat ramp. It is thanks to Johns skills and persistence that this facility will be finally completed.

John McCulloch will always be remembered with warmth and fondness at our club. We pass on to Anne, Jethro and Amber and their family our deepest sympathy. John’s memory and thirst for adventure will always live on within the Bluff Yacht Club.
