We always looked forward to visiting Auntie Val. I remember as kids I always got the sense that she really liked us. Thoughts and prayers ❤️

Our whole family loved Val. She had a great sense of humour and always had a smile and a laugh for everyone.
My Mum and Val were friends for most of their lives and as young women had some amazing adventures together; living and working in Canada, travelling to England, and then hitch hiking around Europe only a few short years after the war had ended. They had the time of their lives.
She was always genuinely interested in what my brothers and I were doing with our lives, and we loved to see her and chat to her. And Dad was glad of her company in the years after Mum died.
She was such a great lady. We will miss her very much.

I first met Val when I started work as office boy at J G Ward & Co in 1953 and she had just returned home after time in Canada with a strong Canadian accent which provided much amusement with staff.
She was a delight to work with and we all loved her dearly.
She was a special lady.

Val was a very special friend from her time in Te Anau. We had such fun on our walking trips to Stewart Island and also our hours spent with our embroidery. Val was a very special lady.

Auntie Val visited our family in Invercargill often when we were kids. She brought a lot of joy and excitement. I remember her arriving to our house with loud music, presents and those big square glasses with a smile. Thanks for the happy memories Val. We always looked forward to when you were coming. The Layard Street Cuthills love and miss you dearly.

Val was descended from a pioneer family who lived in the house that is now the St. Johns private girls school in Dee St.
They had a tailoring business and a farm.
I remember her when she worked in Jocks and Aunty Norma's office in Tay St. Sitting at a type writer.
She was always a loyal family member, she was a keen trapper and skier and I think this is what explains her longevity?
The family spent weekends at 'pyjama cottage' Te Anau.
My sister Margaret was more her age group so knew her better than I did.
She spent a couple of years in Vancouver Canada.
I would like to extend thanks to you Chris and the staff at Calvary for the excellent care she received on behalf of the McDonald family.
Dear Val, Rest in peace. Your cousin Linda Sampson nee' McDonald

Val was a special member of Fiordland Embroideres Guild and her embroidery skills were always eagerly passed on to our members. She loved to share her beautiful home entertaining us too. Rest in peace after a life we'll lived.
