I've only met my Uncle Hugh a few times but from the very first I realised what a lovely, genuine, caring and humorous man he was. He was so down-to- earth and unpretentious. And as an aside, when I was quite young I learnt from him that you can boost the clover content in your pasture by spraying with a light concentration of Round-up!

To Martin, Kirsty, Gill, Andrew & families. Hugh and his New Years bagpipe entrance at Tahakopa, it still makes me smile. I will never forget Ada & Hugh and their genuine friendship for Mum. Sincerest sympathy to you all.

Stopping in at Waikawa to see Uncle Hugh and Aunty Ada was always a highlight of our South Island family holidays. Hugh was kind, generous and fun. Lots of love to you all.

This is a poem Uncle Hugh recited in 2010 at my mother's funeral when we laid her ashes at my father's gravesite. I thought it was so nice I would like to say it now for Uncle Hugh.

Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie,
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.

This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.
