McMurdo, Ellen (Nell) Theresa:

Passed away peacefully on 25 September 2026, surrounded by her loving family at her home (Waikiwi Gardens) Invercargill, age of 99.

Dearly loved wife of the late David Edward (Joe), mother of Susan and Lesley Clark, Karen Matthews and James, Lyndsay and Sonny Tautari, Brett McMurdo and Michelle, Marina Matthews and John; and treasured nana and grandma of Ashlynn, Anjoeen, Delaney, Nadeskah, Marina, Deanna, Jaci, David, Morgan, Marsh, Sarai, Kahli, Lahni, Jessica, and Daniel; and beloved great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. 

Requiem Mass for Nell will be held at St. Mary’s Basilica, 65 Tyne Street, Invercargill, on Wednesday 30 September 2026 at 1pm. Afternoon tea will follow. 

Very special thanks to the nurses and staff at Waikiwi Gardens Rest Home and Hospice Southland especially Rebecca.

It was a privilege to have Nell as part of our Waikiwi Gardens family for so many years.

Nell was one of our original residents when we took over in 2017. Over the years, she became such a special and familiar part of Waikiwi Gardens.

At 99 years of age, Nell was a truly elegant lady and a loving matriarch to her extended family. She carried herself with a quiet grace and dignity, and she will be remembered fondly by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

We feel very fortunate to have shared so many years with Nell and to have been part of her journey. Although we are no longer at Waikiwi Gardens, Nell will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we know she will be greatly missed by her Waikiwi family.

Rest peacefully, Nell. You were very much loved and will always be remembered.

Both Nellie and Dave were great caregivers to me when I lived with them to be able to keep going to Kingswell High School, after Mum and Dad went back to Oamaru
