To Michael’s family

The Board, the Council, the CEO and staff at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and our members extend our sincerest sympathy and condolences to you all on Michael’s passing.

As you know Michael was a valued member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (and its predecessor organisations) for 60 years, having become a member in March 1960, a Fellow in 1989 and having been made a life member in 2002 at a time when life membership was limited to twenty members.

We appreciate the immense contribution and support Michael provided to our organisation. He was involved with our organisation in so many ways over many decades. We are preparing an obituary to publish on our website.

Michael will be sorely missed by our organisation and New Zealand’s accounting and wider business community.

Michael loved the fine things in life. After all he was the man who flew Concorde and wasn’t that impressed! He was never happier than when he travelled to visit his family in different parts of the world. We had a memorable trip to Southern Ireland when he paid for everything, as was the custom, and in Limerick we visited a very old lady, a distant cousin he had found doing his family research.
It was very nice of him to pop in to see my parents in Athol when he was passing through and they always enjoyed seeing him.
To us he was always Tony’s big brother, who found love and a new family later in life and always had a story to tell.

Michael was a friend and mentor for more than two decades, as an x president of New Zealand squash I was extremely grateful for his wise counsel on many occasions as I went through my squash administration time. His guidance and support also in getting my son Neils career under way was very much appreciated.. a true gentleman with a warm sense of humour, RIP 💕

Have been thinking for a while about what to say, posted a tribute a week ago but it seems to have fallen through the net.
The memories all tend to bring a smile to my face.....
Your party piece aka The Sparrow, maybe not known to younger family but definitely not forgotten by others , I can’t imagine you taught anybody that ‘skill’ so I assume it has passed with you.
Your generosity particularly when all the siblings were together. The bill at the end of the meal was the hottest thing on the table, until it landed on your lap probably helped by the fact that we couldn’t or didn’t find our wallets.
Your driving ability, so much so that there was always a race for someone else to get in the drivers seat first.
Apparently you liked fine wine, but whenever I was there the cellar (garage) was somehow locked so we had to get by on the $10 Trust special.
You gave me several bits of advice most of which I have forgotten except ‘ to get out of Invercargill’ . I often wished you had followed that advice but you met Rosemary and her girls so that was that. You had too brief a time with Rosemary but the girls took you on board and looked after you.
Will miss you, great photo by the way, much luvs
