Farewell Mrs Merriman
Dear Kaye, Gloria, Rosalie, Wayne and Noel and families, Thinking of you all across the Indian and Tasman seas on this very sad day to celebrate a life well lived in honour of a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and friend, Mrs Elsie Merriman.
I have known Mrs Merriman literally since I was born as Kaye was born two weeks exactly after I was born in 1970. Some of the fondest memories I have of Mrs Merriman when I was growing up include when my Mum would take us kids on an early evening walk to the Merriman house, and sometimes it would be a starry moonlit night, and we would enjoy a lovely visit and cuppa. Mrs Merriman always made us feel welcome with her kindness, always with a smile on her face, and would readily say I’ll put the jug on for a cuppa. I know Georgie wrote she loved Mrs Merriman’s macaroni cheese! It was the best! Those indeed were the good old days growing up. Many fond and happy memories.
I always kept in touch with Mrs Merriman from the time I left home, which was a long time ago. But without fail, Mrs Merriman would always remember my birthday and I enjoyed receiving her cards as well as Christmas cards each and every year. Actually I have kept all of her letters in a seachest. It was only in the last five years that I no longer received those cards…
I always enjoyed the visits to catch up with Mrs Merriman and she would always update me on the news of the family. The last time I visited Mrs Merriman, when I was home in NZ, was in December 2018 when I took Mum and my daughter for a visit to her house in Winton.
You will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you for your kindness and motherly care over the years. Rest in Peace.
A Poem about Mothers…
We are born of love; love is our mother.
When you look into your mother’s eyes,
you know that is the purest love you can find on this earth.
A mother is she who can take the place of all others
but whose place no one else can take.
Life doesn’t come with a manual,
it comes with a mother.
May your soul rest in peace…Farewell.
