Peter was an amazing man who gave so much to others and to his community. He was such an interesting guy to talk to and such a genuine person. Dave and I really enjoyed his company and the generosity he showed to sailors. Big hugs to Donni and much sympathy to his family.

We are so sad to hear of Peters passing. Peter did so much for his family friends and the community, We were privileged to buy and live in a house he built in the 1950s.. He was supportive during our families difficult times and a joy when he spent time regaling stories of the past.. Rest In Peace Arohanui Ake Ake

We are heavy hearted in our whanau. We have such fond memories of Peter, his warmth, kindness and generosity. The way he welcomed myself and my boys so instantly into the Goomes family, and through his connection to Rakiura showed us a glimpse of who we are. Its hard to explain what that meant to us. In such a short moment in time Peter had a huge impact on my life and the lives of my sons. Forever grateful for having known him. Sending aroha to Donnie and all of the Goomes whanau. From Lou, Oscar and Harvey.

To the Goomes family - our thoughts have been with you over the past few months and are now at this sad time. We are grateful to have worked with Peter in contexts varying from building site to boardroom to organizing yacht races and to have known him as a colleague and true friend. We will miss his cheerful presence and his ability to find practical solutions to complex problems. Most of all we will miss his warm friendship.

To the Goomes family. - It was with sadness we learnt of Peter's passing. Worked with Peter on a couple of building sites and on boats and became good friends. We enjoyed Peter's smiling face and the gifts of blue cod when he visited. Condolences to all the family

Our family and I in Adelaide have been enormously blessed to know Peter. Rachael my daughter married Doug, and by doing so gained the best father-in-law anyone could wish for! Peter’s wonderful gifts of happiness and love, endless kindness and great good humour - as well as his building and problem solving skills! - have been legend amongst our Adelaide family and community.
He adored his family, was so proud of his grandchildren Josh, Hannah, Sarah and Ben as they grew up and they adored him in return. We all loved him.
My most sincere sympathy goes to his family and the many people whose lives Peter touched. His Adelaide family will miss him forever.
Thank you God for Peter.

My wife, Ginger and I were blessed to be touched by Kiwis. It began in 1955-56 when a young Kiwi kid, journeyed to Madison, Wisconsin as an A.F.S. student. we formed a friendship that has lasted for 65+ years. In 2001, we were honored to sample the splendor of New Zealand, it's many kind, good, people and it's marvelous culture. A visit to Stewart Island was among the high points. It was there we met Peter. In a few short days, he revealed himself to be a very bright, highly skilled, multi-talented man. He was everyone's "superlative handyman." Giving and doing for others was his obvious trademark. It was a short visit, we yanks, did not know Peter well, but he left a lasting impression. He was Stewart Island's genuine good guy. Donni, Merv, Rosemary please accept our sincere condolences.
